Description: The Center for Western Studies at Augustana College received a grant for the annual Dakota Conference. This year, the theme is
"The Urban Plains," with discussions focusing on the growth of Great Plains cities. The conference is scheduled for April 2006.

Description: Those interested in knowing more about the performances that take place at the Pavilion in SIoux Falls will be able to attend
"Performance Insights" prior to selected productions. The Council awarded a grant to assist with presenter fees and promotion
expenses.

Description: The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society will conduct a "Jazz Diversity" project at a Sioux Falls middle school. The project allows students
to learn about history through jazz music and hear performances by a local jazz group. This new way of teaching aims to foster an appreciation
for both history and music.

Description: Arch Ellwein, a leading scholar on the life of Teddy Roosevelt, will come to Yankton to present a Chautauqua-style lecture from the
TR era. The event is February 12.

Description: DWU presented the annual McGovern Conference in November 2005. The grant went to cover a portion of the speaker fees. The topics that
were presented dealt with world hunger and AIDS awareness and what the religious community can do to respond to these problems.

Description: Page Lambert, a Wyoming fiction and short story author, will travel to Pierre to present a writing workshop. This will be the third
year of the program. The workshop is open to the public.
Media Programs
Recipient: Native American Community Board

Description: The Native American Community Board in Lake Andes received a grant for a project that will lead to a series of taped oral
histories about their culture. The history of the church in the community and traditional songs will be included. The project will eventually
be donated and available to the public at university libraries across the state.
Research Programs

Description: The Institute of American Indian Studies at USD received a grant to document, study and preserve Native histories. A consultant from
the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress has been contracted to consult with the project organizers.

Description: Custer Public School teachers received a grant to study Elizabeth Bacon Custer. The research will lead to one teacher performing
a series of Chautauqua-style presentations to students studying South Dakota and local history.
Teachers' Institute

Description: Black Hills State University in Spearfish will host two one-week teachers' institutes this summer with the theme of tribal lands.
The institute will be open to teachers across the state and features professors from several universities.
