One Book South Dakota 2008
The South Dakota Humanities Council is pleased to announce "One Book South Dakota" 2008. The selected text is Louise
Erdrich's The Master Butchers Singing Club. SDHC invites libraries, book clubs, schools, civic organizations and
corporations to be part of the One Book experience this year.

The Sixth Annual South Dakota Festival of Books is set for September 26-28 in downtown Sioux Falls! This event, "where readers and writers rendezvous" will offer
something for everyone, and with the exception of special events, everything is free and open to the public.

Celebrate Fahrenheit 451! Ray Bradbury's classic is the selected text for The Big Read 2008 in South Dakota. Eight cities - Sioux Falls
Rapid City, Madison, Martin, Ridgeview, Spearfish, Scotland and Pierre serve as The Big Read communities and will be the sites for a host of events celebrating
Fahrenheit 451, science-fiction and Bradbury. CONGRATULATIONS to the Sioux Falls writing contest winners -- Janice Mikesell (First Place - Adult Division) and
Hope Victoria Yount (Honorable Mention - Student Division).

Between Fences
SDHC presents the Smithsonian exhibit BETWEEN FENCES, coming to the state in September 2008. The exhibition will make stops in Vermillion (WH Over Museum, Sept. 24-Nov. 1), Pollock
(Pollock Visitor and Interpretive Center, Nov. 8-Dec. 21), Brookings (SD Ag Heritage Museum, Dec. 27-Feb. 8), Chamberlain (SD Hall of Fame, Feb. 14-March 29), Sturgis (Sturgis
Public Library, April 4-May 19) and Howard (Miner County Rural Life Museum, May 23-July 4).

The SD Humanities Council and Foundation are working to meet the goals of a National Endowment for
